The Raiders were one of the foundation teams of the Association and were initially registered as the ‘Kosmic Raiders” for reasons long forgotten. Possibly silly names were obligatory at the time.

The current Raiders team was formed in 1999 as a result of a merger with the Pirates (nee : Wombats) due to a player shortage on both sides. As combined names such as Pie-Raiders didn’t appear to work, it was finally agreed to go with the Raiders, given that it was an inaugural team name.

The team places social enjoyment and interaction above all else and receives great support from our wives / partners with regular functions and get togethers organised throughout the year.

A highlight for the players is the regular mid season weekend training camp which provides an environment that enables the team to refocus and set goals for the remainder of the season. The activities include –

A) Motivational movies (read into that what you will)
B) Decision making under pressure with financial incentives (poker, pontoon etc)
C) Hard physical training under trying conditions (18 holes of early morning golf after 3 hours sleep)
D) Best practice diet and rehydration techniques. (BBQ‘s and snacks followed by a bacon and eggs breakfast interspersed with high energy sports drinks – beer, wine, scotch and port).

The Raiders philosophy is to be as competitive as possible on the field while never losing sight of the fact that the reason for being part of the team is to enjoy yourself and the company of others. The only non negotiable rule is –“treat the port barrel with reverence and keep it full at all times”
